Containerizing January 23, 2011

I recently was checking out my best friend’s blog. She is working on an organizing challenge from A Bowl Full of Lemons. This is where I learned the word “containerizing“. I don’t think I had heard this term before and was intrigued. Pretty self-explanitory: it’s a way to organizing your home using containers. I didn’t think it would be such a big deal but decide to give it a shot because I liked the way my friend’s spaces were looking after implementing this process. I went out to Big Lots today armed with my 20% off your entire order coupon from their website in search of containers. (As I piled these in my cart, I could see my husband’s eye rolls and head shakes) With a few other things I needed, I spent about $36 dollars after saving $8.72 with my coupon.

I brought my turquoise, and lime green, and purple baskets home and couldn’t even wait until dinner was finished to start trying them out! Decided the laundry room was the easiest place to start since I have open shelves there.  Here is what I was looking at before:

Not too horrible but not great either. So, I got rid of one two un-needed items and organized everything else. And here’s the after results:

It definitely made a difference. There is stain remover stuff in one basket, laundry soap and fabric softener in another, and cleaning stuff in the next two. And cleaning towels in the last basket. Maybe next time I’m out I’ll grab some bigger baskets for the gallon bottles like bleach and things. I still had some baskets left so I decided to check out under the kitchen sink while I was making dinner…OH MY!

Yeah, that’s horrible! What a mess! So I took and old coffee container (love these!) and put in a bunch of the grocery bags that were hanging out in there and put the rest in the car for a trip to Wal-Mart for recycling tomorrow. Then organized the rest… check this out:

How awesome is that?! It’s so pretty! I am already planning another trip for more containers! After all, there are 3 bathrooms in this house, and LOTS of cupboards! And of course, I can’t end this post without a big thanks to my best friend, Erica, for sharing her organization journey and getting me on board! 🙂 Love her!

On my next post I’ll talk a little about couponing and how to get started without going nuts!
